BJ Barham's Album Review Rockingham

Monday, September 19, 2016

The first time I had the chance to see American Aquarium it was a fun trip I tell you what. First it was my first time at the Blue Light, second it was my birthday and third it was an American Aquarium! I had been told several times that they put on an incredible show. I had spent most of the day with one of my good friends. Which when you go to an American Aquarium show bring friends because they need to experience it.  Walking in I saw several people I knew and some of them wished me well on my special day. The best thing was when the music started several of my friends grabbed my hands and pulled me to the front! Oh my heart was so happy.

From the first strum of BJ’s red guitar I fell in love with the sound. I absolutely knew that I would love this band.  What I noticed about BJ and American Aquarium’s sound was it was like no other band I had ever heard. Different but incredible. It’s a sound that I hit me straight in the heart.

BJ Barham recently just debut his solo album Rockingham. Now I would say that it was similar to what the American Aquarium albums but a little more broken down. The first track is American Tobacco Company. I feel like ATC was the perfect way to start out the album. I feel like in the song it takes me to a part of the country I’ve never seen, North Carolina for me land of mystery. While listening to this song I feel like if I close my eyes I can imagine what it was like to grow up there. He also speaks of Pall Mall and Lucky Strikes which makes me think of the show Mad Men.

I feel like the Texas music scene has really adopted the guys. We love them and love the music they make. I feel like the guys BJ and American Aquarium have had an impact in the scene not only in Texas Music scene and Americana but also just in music in general.

While I like all of Rockingham I have two favorite tracks, O’ Lover and Road to Nowhere. Road to Nowhere is a simple but pure song. It’s a song that tells a story. Which are my favorite kinds of songs. His style of songwriting reminds me of Charlie Stout , strong, witty and meaningful.
The intro to O’Lover reminds me of an intro to a 90’s rock song. I feel like this song is a game changer for BJ this is a song that is going to do amazing things for him. One of my favorite lines is from this song and it’s: “Your Hands must blister, they must bleed. Only then will you find beauty not in the bloom but in the weeds.”

This whole album is incredible and it will give you the feels and has so much meaning. I’m just saying I will tell my children someday about this album.

Never stop making music.

Rating 4.5 Of 5 stars

“Easily one of my favorite albums.” – Stephen Bethea of Rivial Music Group.

“In my opinion Rockingham short of having one of the coolest titles I have ever heard. Is one of the most soulful albums I have heard in the last ten years. There is not three tracks on the album that don’t make me cry. Every last one of the songs, and even the ones that are redone. You really can tell that it comes from the soul.” – Quayde Addison of Quayde at Nights at 105.3 The Red Dirt Rebel
